One of the world's most appealing industries in the world from a PR and marketing standpoint, yachting often appears as a relatively untouched field to the automotive industry. Yet, over the years, several players from that market tried to venture into yachting.
Ferrari and family
Brands: Ferretti Group (13.2%)
The Italian sports car manufacturer's history in yachting stretches all the way back to 1990 with the delivery of the Riva Ferrari 32. In total, 30 hulls of this speedboat line styled by Ferrari were built. In 2016, a barely used model was auctioned off by Sotheby's in Monaco at a starting price of €180,000.
Ferrari's most significant step into yachting seems to however have come in 2016, when Piero Ferrari, the son of Ferrari founder, Enzo Ferrari, bought 13.2% of Ferretti Group, the company behind brands such as Riva, CRN and Pershing. Controlled by Chinese conglomerate, Weichai, Ferretti Group posted earnings before tax of €11 million in the first quarter of 2016.
Porsche and family
Brands: Royal Falcon Fleet, Fearless, Kormaran
Through its majority-owned subsidiary, Porsche Design Group, the German company first tried entering yachting with the Fearless 28, an 8.5-meter luxury speedboat reaching top speeds of up to 78 knots, four of which were built.
The German's sports car manufacturer's second attempt to enter yachting came in 2009 with the introduction of a concept for a 41-meter catamaran in combination with Royal Falcon Fleet, a now Swedish-based company that had developed the project for a fractional ownership program with a break down of about 10 owners per RFF135.
The delivery of the first RF135 was however postponed first from Q4 2010 to 2012 and then later seemed to disappear from the map. Part-built, the catamaran is currently still lying in Oregrund, Sweden where Royal Falcon Fleet offices are now located.
In 2012, Peter Daniell Porsche, great-grandson of Porsche founder, Ferdinand Porsche became a partner in Kormaran, a company trying to bring to market a transforming watercraft capable of cruising in six different positions, including a monohull and a trimaran, which is set to retail for near to €1 million.

Partners: Baltic Yachts
In 2016, Mercedes-Benz, the famed German car manufacturer, introduced their first yacht designed by Mercedes-Benz Style, a 14-meter luxury speed boat nicknamed, Silver Arrow of the Seas. Powered by twin Yanmar engines of 480hp each, the yacht can reach speeds of up to 30 knots. With a price tag of near €2,5 million, only 10 of these boats will be manufactured at Baltic Yachts for this first edition.

Partners: Quintessence Yachts
In partnership with Quintessence Yachts, a boat builder based in the Netherlands, Aston Martin have introduced their first 37-foot luxury speedboat at the Monaco Yacht Show last year. Having spent two years in research and development, the A37 will come in two options with top speeds of either 50 or 45 knots.

Partners: Palmer Johnson
The result of a partnership between French car manufacturer, Bugatti and former US shipyard, Palmer Johnson, the Niniette series features several models between 50 and 88 feet. Amongst the project's key amenities are a large sunbathing area on the main deck as well as a spacious living room and a large master cabin on the lower deck.

Partners: Marquis-Carver Yacht Group
Lexus, a division of Japanese car manufacturer, Toyota, had recently launched a concept for a 12.7-meter luxury speedboat built by Marquis-Carver Yacht Group in Wisconsin. The proof of concept could reach a top speed of 43 knots powered by twin 440hp Lexus engines but is not set to go into mass production.
Hatteras has launched the first model in the new 90 series with the public debut taking place in Florida later this year.The yacht features a crisp, light-filled interior that strikes a perfect balance of dramatic form and ingenious function. She incorporates an inspiring range of global design influences to create new uses of living, dining and entertaining spaces. Distinctive features include signature skylights as well as a sweeping staircase to the expansive bridge. A play is created between the interior and exterior spaces, which include a modular bar on the aft deck and ample lounging space on the side decks and bow. The impact of the massive 22'6" beam is felt throughout, including in the four luxurious staterooms.

Dutch shipbuilder Damen has launched Game Changer, its latest 70-metre yacht support vessel with helicopter hangar, in March 2017. The vessel has been later spotted in London and now seen cruising the Med.Game Changer is the fourth yacht support vessel in the 70-metre segment following the delivery of Intrepid, 6711 and Garcon. This latest launch also follows last year’s delivery and sale of the 55-metre showcase vessel Fast & Furious. With its yacht support range, Damen is now the established leader in this rapidly developing niche. In total 11 vessels have been delivered or are in build.The vessel features a fully certified helideck so owners can take larger helicopters on long range flights to their mother yachts and land safely in a wider weather window. Lowering the helicopter into the hangar protects it from the elements so it is refuelled and available for take-off without causing hassle, disruption and noise on the mother yacht.In addition, Game Changer has 250 square metres of open deck space for tenders and toys. The large deck crane makes logistics and handling simple, fast and safe. Below deck there is a further 110 square-metre storage space/dive centre. The YS 6911 has offices, facilities and accommodation for 22 crew and staff. It can carry a huge amount of extra provisions, fuel (marine, aviation and petrol), luggage and spare parts.

Design Unlimited has presented its latest trimaran concept, intended to partner business and pleasure in an efficient and high performing package. Measuring 46.8m, she’ll be built to LY3 and MLC regulations, with accommodation for nine in four cabins, and crew quarters for six. Maximum speed predictions are for 24 knots, with a range of 2,500 nautical miles cruising at 14 knots.The compact Trimaran design has a drag coefficient so low that build and running costs equate to a monohull half her size. Test results from the Potsdam tank facility in Germany have exceeded all expectations in terms of hydrodynamic resistance, pitch and roll.The design has already undergone extensive development stages. Mani Frers has lead all aspects of the naval architecture and styling, McConaghy have developed the engineering and systems on board, composite engineering has been handled by Pure Design, a peer-review of the vessel’s incredible seakeeping qualities has been made by DNVGL, and the interior design comes from Design Unlimited. This highly advanced superyacht is now ready to commence production.Headlining the interior arrangement is the panoramic master suite, which utilises the upper deck. This large stateroom is complemented by an en-suite bathroom, dressing room with walk-in wardrobe and a private gym – all with views to the horizon. The private deck space is accessed via glass sliding doors and also positioned here is the owner’s helipad.The main saloon and interior dining area, spanning the 11.3m beam, have an open flow making for seamless transitions between the interior and exterior spaces, with the main aft deck serving as a social area, beach club and additional lounge. Versatility of space was key to the brief and the interior spaces can be closed off to create private areas more suited to business use. Glass has been used extensively in the design and will incorporate the latest heat-reflective technology.The interior styling is modern, with an underlying colour palette that is clean and simple. Accents of colour and texture details are then used to add personality to the space. Manufactured from lightweight materials throughout to reach target speed and range, particular attention will also be paid to sound proofing – ensuring a relaxed and peaceful environment for owner and guests.This superyacht also features an abundance of desirable lifestyle elements. On the aft deck, a large sheltered lounge area with bar facilities frames a pool, steps either side of which then lead down to the swim platform. Functionality and ease of movement for the crew was also an important part of the brief. The yacht’s tenders and toys are deployed from the sides of the hull, with the crew tender housed forward.

If Only, a 39-meter Feadship, has caught fire earlier today around 14:00 in front of Nice's airport in France. All eleven guests and a reported crew of 4 are now safe according to Nice Matin.Rapidly dispatched to the yacht that was less than 5 nautical miles from the shore, local firefighters were able to put out the fire onboard.Built by Dutch-based Feadship in 1974 as Wallanka, the yacht was later renamed to If Only. Lurssen superyacht Skat has arrived to the Netherlands for Royal Huisman's refit. 70.7m yacht, launched in 2002, has already been to Huisfit facilities twice: in 2012 and 2014.Skat features interior design by Marco Zanini and an exterior design by Espen Oeino. With a beam of 13.5 m and a draft of 3.75 m, she has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. This adds up to a gross tonnage of 1998 tons. Performance wise Skat is powered by 2680 hp engines each giving her a maximum speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots. She can accommodate 10 guests in 5 cabins.
