In the spotlight throughout a long-running case around Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund 1MDB, the 91-meter Equanimity is now being auctioned for a nine-figure sum by Malaysia's government. Built by Oceanco, the superyacht was delivered with one of the largest spas ever seen onboard a yacht.

1MDB was created in 2009 as a sovereign wealth fund with over $4 billion under management to invest in strategic projects. After a series of investments in energy and real estate, a controversy around the fund began as to whether funds had been misappropriated throughout this period by management and government officials.

Later investigations led to asset seizures spearheaded by the US DoJ, amongst which was Equanimity. It was then claimed that her owner, financier Jho Low, had ordered the yacht using profits that were connected to 1MDB's real estate dealings and off-shore accounts totalling over $250 million for the yacht's purchase and upkeep.

Financed also in part through a loan by Sotheby's financial against art works, Equanimity was delivered in 2014 and introduced at the Monaco Yacht Show later that year where she won the award of finest yacht. Amongst her main highlights was an extensive spa area that spanned a large part of her lower deck.

Following developments in the 1MDB case, the DoJ moved to seize Equanimity in June 2017 as part of their effort to recoup an estimated $400 million in alleged profits from Low. The yacht was eventually seized in Indonesia at the request of Malaysian authorities. According to a spokesman for Equanimity (Cayman) Ltd, this was done in violation of Indonesian and American court rulings.

Following the seizure, the yacht was transported to Malaysia where finance minister, Lim Guan Eng said an auction of the yacht was to take place. It is now understood at least nine figures were being sought for the yacht at the auction, which is expected to be completed by March 2019.

Equanimity was, however, famous across the yachting community, well before being pushed into the limelight by this case, for its extensive spa area on the lower deck, plunge pools and highly customised interior. At 2,998 gross tons of interior volume, the yacht still sits as the 65th largest yacht in the world.

The 91-meter's spa is akin to that of a megapolis' 5-star hotel. Incorporating plunge pools, massage areas, saunas, experiential showers, hammams, jacuzzis and a gym all designed with the most precious of materials, it directly connects to a beach club from which guests can swim out into the ocean.

Equanimity's 5 decks are connected by a grand staircase coupled with a glass elevator. Accommodating up to 22 guests in 11 cabins, the yacht was the first one to be built to comply with the new Passenger Yacht Code.  Carrying a crew of 31, the yacht can cruise for up to 5,000 nautical miles at a speed of 15 knots, with its top speed at 18.5 kn.

Aft of its second deck, Equanimity features a large helipad, typically covered with lounging sofas and sun beds when not in use. Forward of the helipad is a 20sqm spa pool sitting in front of the entrance to the yacht's spacious main salon. Throughout the deck, guests are kept within the atmosphere of a luxurious, relaxing spa.

Inside, across the yacht's lounges and cabins can be found a continuing theme of the sea rendered through a clever use of sculptures, ornaments and glass. Centred around a clear colour scheme with tall windows throughout, Equanimity's interior almost acts as an extension of the sea wherever the yacht cruises.

Equanimity's staterooms, styled like a luxurious, modern hotel, are spread out into a master cabin with a study, which can be converted into a double cabin, a VVIP suite, 3 VIP cabins, as well as an additional 2 double and 2 twin cabins spread out throughout the yacht's main deck, giving good views to all guests.

Fully-equipped, the 91-meter's gym can be used underway but is best enjoyed when at anchor, with a fold down platform that opens up onto the sea and lets guests exercise practically on the water. Equanimity also comes complete with two custom-designed, 10-meter Hodgdon tenders to ferry around her guests in style.

Malaysia's auction will see qualified buyers making sealed bids for the yacht in view of a sale that is set to complete by March 2019. Whilst the exact asking price is for the moment unknown, officials are looking for a 9 figure number according to various press reports. This becomes the 2nd high profile yacht auctioned off this year, following the 95-meter Oceanco, Indian Empress, which was sold earlier this year for €35 million during an auction in Malta.

Is the AXOPAR 37 Sun-Top the perfect chase boat?
A new Chase Boat has entered the market and it’s quickly climbed the ranks to our number one spot, says Chase Tenders. We’re finding it difficult to find another Chase Boat that offers the perfect mix of boating and hospitality like that of the AXOPAR 37 Sun-top. High-build quality, unique in design and versatile, the Sun-Top is ideal for owners, guests and crews alike. If you’ve ever asked yourself the question ‘How does a Chase Boat benefit us more than a traditional garaged tender or RIB?’ we think the Sun-Top might be the answer. We understand that, in the world of 35 foot plus superyacht tenders, there’s a broad range of high-quality boats, all promising stand-out features that can quickly turn heads. So, to make things easier, we’ve broken down why the AXOPAR 37 Sun-Top is the Chase Tender team’s Chase Boat of choice for the coming season. Let’s start with the space on deck, offering a range of different social dimensions. The Sun-Top offers an extended length roof when compared to its T-Top counterpart; offering maximum shade and weather protection, and with a full-length Sunbrella canvas section that can be opened with ease, you can quickly turn it into an open boat. You can choose a manually-controlled canopy or upgrade to the fully electrical or fully enclosed options.Underneath the Sun-Top, there are seven fixed seating positions which can be arranged to be forward facing, or seated around a central dining table. The Sun-Top also benefits from a large foredeck seat, where you can sit back and relax or use as a sunbed. With such a large amount of deck space available, the Sun-Top provides an easy walkaround side deck, allowing guests, especially younger ones, to access all parts of the boat comfortably and safely, a standout feature compared to other typical Chase Boats of this size. You can choose to add the optional aft cabin, though as standard, the vessel offers a well-equipped double forecabin featuring a toilet, sink and air-conditioning (if specified). The aft offers a sunbed above, or you can choose a wet-bar with fridge, electric grill and sink in its place. On top of that, the vessel offers up to two drawer-type refrigerators on deck along with two large storage lockers, which holds enough food & drink for all-day hospitality. This is ideal for owners and guests pursuing an al-fresco dining experience wherever and whenever they can.For guests, there is a large amount of deck space aft and a boarding ladder, coupled with a ski frame, making the Sun-top a fantastic choice for watersports enthusiasts. This not only means you have very satisfied guests, but ensures the parent vessel as a package stands out as an exceptional charter amongst its competitors. Chase Tenders has also successfully equipped many Sun-Top models with a bow towing eye, allowing flexibility to conserve its fuel during passage making, or for all crew to be available on the parent vessel. When comparing it to the competition, the AXOPAR 37 Sun-Top comes equipped with a well specified list of options, a pair of Mercury Verado 350HP outboards (capable of 45 knots), delivery and commissioning for circa €210,000 plus TAX. Compare this to an Ex. works, Ex. TAX price of €580,000 for a Wally Tender. When you take into consideration the need to update tenders on a regular basis due to high hours, wear and the need to keep the parent vessel’s treasure chest new and appealing, the Sun-Top certainly offers excellent value. The 37 Sun-Top is available to order from Chase Tenders ready for the 2019 season!Favourite features:· Forecabin - All 37 models have a spacious and bright forecabin with lounge seating, a queen size bed, a fixed cupboard and a toilet with privacy curtains.· Sunbed on Foredeck - The foredeck features a large sunbed with cup holders and optional cushions· Adjustable table in Cockpit - The 37 TT and ST models are fitted with an adjustable table in the cockpit. The front seats can be turned to face the sofa for entertaining 7 guests by the table.· Day Cruiser Aft Cabin - All models can be equipped with a day cruiser cabin on aft deck sleeping 2 persons with twin flush Lewmar roof hatches and side windows.· Walk-around Deck - All 37 models feature a walk-around deck for easy handling and access.· Sun-Top with Sliding Canvas Section - The 37 Sun-Top gets its name from the huge sliding canvas mid section which lets you either enjoy the sunshine in the cockpit or shield yourself from strong sunlight and heat. What clients say:Tristan Mortlock, Captain of MY AWOL:"We bought "Chasing AWOL" (AXOPAR 37 ST) from Chase Tenders beginning of 2018. It was a very easy, pleasant and smooth experience. We are very happy with the result and very happy with the boat. It's been a great addition to the mother ship and we highly recommend it as a chase boat to any vessel. Big thank you to Chase Tenders, we're looking forward to a great summer".Jonathan Wiehahn, Tender Captain of MY Mischief“I’ve had the pleasure of captaining a 37 AXOPAR for the summer. She’s been a great tender and easy to manage and manoeuvre. On the managing side, as it’s a fairly basic boat, there is not much to go wrong. Everything is in an accessible place so doing my morning checks of bilges and all systems it was easy. I really like the improvements from the previous AXOPAR to the current one we have.In calm weather she gets up on the plane easily and just glides through the water. Get the trim tabs correct and trim the engines and you can easily do 48 knots. In slightly heavier conditions you just need to get your angle into the swell right and she just rides right over with easy, keeping guests dry. And close quarter manoeuvres she’s very easy to handle and with the bow thruster you can get into very tight spaces and make it look easy”.Sponsored by Chase Tenders
70-metre custom yacht project She by CRN
CRN presents She, the new 70-metre custom yacht project with a sophisticated style and delicate harmony of form. The new concept has been developed by the CRN Technical Office working closely with Vallicelli Design, the Italian architecture and design studio helmed by Andrea Vallicelli and Alessandro Nazareth. As her name suggests, the She design concept exudes a certain femininity of touch with a subtly seductive construction, as can be appreciated in the generous spaces on the decks and the ample, welcoming interiors. The slender profile and linear styling, with the horizontal line inscribed from the bow all along the hull and around the transom, lend the architectural composition a certain effervescence. The clarity of the design shines through in the hallmark blend of geometrical expressiveness and the fluidity of the decorative elements. This personal aesthetic signature is visible both in the lines of the side gunwales, forming two wings in the fore area on the upper and owner decks, and in the beauty of the forward canopies and glass railings. With her five decks, array of outdoor areas, and transcendent interior comfort, She is designed for an owner who loves to spend long periods on board with their guests while savouring the cruising experience.“She is a new design of considerable potential, defined by her flexibility, sophistication of line and generous interior and exterior spaces devised by Vallicelli Design in what is proving a highly satisfactory partnership. We are hard at work on various projects, starting with the new 70m vessel for which we now have a signed contract, as recently announced”, commented Stefano De Vivo, CRN Chief Commercial Officer. “Working with CRN is always an exciting challenge, and this project is no exception. As the yacht’s name suggests, the softness and delicacy of feminine forms have strongly inspired this design and its fluid, elegant lines”, added Andrea Vallicelli, Architect at Vallicelli Design.
