Superyachts are quite understandably, mainly associated with the Mediterranean or the Caribbean as it is where the majority of them cruises. In recent years however, yachts have ventured into destinations that were unthinkable just a few decades ago.
Galkynys
Length: 59m (193 ft)
Yard: Benetti (2007)
Location: Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan
Purchased by the Government of Turkmenistan in the summer of 2008 according to Russian newspaper, Vedomosti, the 59-meter Benetti was renamed from Wind to Galkynys, meaning re-birth, following the transaction.
Shortly after the change in ownership, Galkynys was relocated to the Caspian Sea, an inland body of water, as part of an ambitious program to develop the country's touristic landscape and serve as the presidential yacht. Last mentioned by media in 2012, it is believed that Galkynys is still cruising in the Caspian Sea.
Gadean
Length: 35m (115 ft)
Yard: Bertolini (2012)
Location: Amazon river, Brazil
Delivered in October 2012 by Amazon river-based shipyard, Bertolini, Gadean was one of two 35-meter yachts built at the same time by the Brazilian yard for two business men from Manaus for them to navigate on them on the Amazon river.
40m Sunseeker
Sistership
Cruising around relatively unnoticed whilst in the Mediterranean or Caribbean, 40-meter Sunseekers were however never seen before in rural Russia until this summer. In July 2016, an unnamed 40-meter Sunseeker was spotted by Russian media in Volgograd, a Russian city with a population of just over 1 million inhabitants located on the bank of the Volga river.
Length: 71m (234 ft)
Yard: Richards Shipbuilde / Atlantic Refit Center (1987 / 2013)
Location: Northwest passage
Originally built for the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency in 1988 as Norna, her first mission was to prevent illegal fishing in the North Atlantic. Decommissioned in 2010, she was sold to her current owner who refitted her into a 71-meter superyacht with an exterior design by Philippe Briand. The yacht since embarked on a mission to explore both poles, a trend growing in popularity amongst superyachts in recent years.
35m Benetti
Although not delivered yet, it is already known that the 35-meter yacht currently in construction at Benetti with an extremely specific set of amenities will be delivered to the Government of Tokyo in 2018. Amongst its facilities will be a 35 guests conference room. The yacht will have a draft of 1.25m and a max speed of 25 knots.
Selenga
Length: 50m (164 ft)
Yard: Ulan-Ude (2015)
Location: Lake Baikal, Russia
Selenga's build process started in an Ulan-Ude based shipyard in 2007 but was then put on hold in 2009 with the start of the financial crisis. Selenga's hull and superstructure were eventually completed by 2014 but shallow rivers prevented the yacht from being taken to her intended place of use, Lake Baikal.
The yacht was eventually brought to the lake in 2015 in a custom-built dock to begin the interior fitting process. Designed by Igor Lobanov, Selenga can accommodate 12 guests in one master, 2 VIP, 1 twin and 2 guest cabins. Located on Lake Baikal in southern Siberia, Selenga is the only yacht to cruise on the inland body of water that contains nearly 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water.
