The first sailing yacht, delivered by Southern Wind in 2022, has left the Cape Town coast to the Mediterranean. The 32m sailing yacht Sørvind is the fifth unit of the successful SW105 mini series. She comes from the solid collaboration between Southern Wind, Nauta Design and Farr Yacht Design who all worked closely with the owner to customize the latest SW105 to match his taste and specific requirements.
Distinctive, refined and essential: these were the pillars of the owner’s brief, reflected in his lifestyle and instilled in every detail of his yacht. In the words of captain Timothy Anderson: “The owner wanted a sailing yacht where he is still in touch with the ocean, a sensation that sometimes gets lost with bigger boats. I think we really hit a nice size of boat and a great style. Everything is uncluttered, smooth and clean”.
With an aggressive look accentuated by a sleek black hull, Sørvind is constructed with a full carbon hull, deck and bulkheads. Weight control was a priority with major savings gained by the use of synthetic teak decking and titanium stanchions, pulpits, cleats and fairleads. The result is a 69,500 kg yacht that can sail in lighter wind conditions with reduced dependency on engine power.
Sørvind’s interior was designed by Nauta Design with the help of the Dutch Studio Hermanides and features a full beam en-suite owner’s cabin forward. A VIP cabin aft of the owner’s cabin and two double en-suite guest cabins amidships mean that a total of eight guests can be accommodated aboard, a comfortable and spacious layout that is perfect for charter guests.
The saloon is a light, bright open space where eight to ten people can relax in comfort on sofas or around the dining table. Immediately forward of the living area is a fully equipped custom bar that separates the main saloon from the owner’s private area. The aft crew area is an efficient living and working environment for up to six crew in three cabins.
“Because of the owner's Nordic background we looked at the colors of Nature from the Nordic landscape: long dark nights combined with bright white snow, a style that the owner has dubbed 'Nordic Cool'. We really wanted a good contrast between the different colors of veneer, to get a more homey look and feel. The dark veneer doesn’t make it dark because we combined it with a lot of very light colors and materials to get a fresh look”, explains Jeroen Machielsen, Studio Hermanides’ founder.
