BYD has deployed its skills to create a lethal combination of speed, strength and pure adrenaline in the form of the new Fugu 29 sports RIB. When the Swedish start-up first got in touch with lead architect Tia Simó, the hull shape for the 29ft rocket had already been set in stone.
What was missing was the structure to support the high performance PeteStep hull at great speed and under huge loads. Not only that, but the result had to be well balanced and comfortable. PeteStep is a Swedish business that has designed a patented fast hull form with lower wetted surface than normal V-shaped hull and deflectors that direct spray aft. It results in a quieter, more stable ride with much lower slamming and half the G-force, as well as a third less fuel burn. But in order to see those benefits the design and engineering of the boat is critical.
“With such a high performance boat, the structure design is very delicate,” explains Simó. “The material selection and mechanical properties take on the utmost importance. One of our main goals was to achieve structural continuity with the large number of steps or interruptions in the hull skins of the boat. Production techniques were also very important, so as to achieve the desired mechanical properties for the designed structure.”
The result is a day boat with four Ullman Bulldog shock-absorbing seats complete with flip out foot pedals to make light of rough conditions at speed. There’s a ghost of an aft sun pad and simple interior with a V-berth and an optional heads cubicle. Inboard engine options run up to an 8.2-litre Mercruiser V8 with a whopping 430hp capable of speeds up to 60 knots.
And yet, despite all this, the Fugu 29 offers staggering efficiency – consuming around 1lt of fuel per nautical mile at an exhilarating 40 knots. At a still-respectable 20 knots, range moves out to more than 300 miles.
“Performance and efficiency are always a balance between a good hull design, structure optimisation as well as arrangement and balance,” says Simó. “When you start adding unnecessary items to the boat the performance gets compromised, so it’s always hard to find the balance when we’re talking about a pleasure craft. I believe we have done so here with great success.”

The 27.5-meter motor yacht Slow Poke (ex-Coy Koi) has emerged from a comprehensive $8 million refit at Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center, completed in 2024. Originally built in 2000 as part of Kuipers' Doggersbank series, the Vripack-designed explorer underwent a 2.5-year transformation to suit its American owner's preferences for vintage-inspired functionality.Key modifications include a 2.5-meter hull extension with a CFD-optimized bulbous bow, improving speed by 2 knots and reducing fuel consumption by 10%. The redesign also incorporated a hydraulic swim platform and elevated stern. "Slow Poke now has a platform that allows us to engage with the water easily and freely while we explore," the owner stated.The yacht retains its original steel hull and aluminum superstructure, with mechanical systems including rebuilt engines and generators from a 2018 refit. New exterior features include black hull paint with a British racing green stripe and custom awning artwork by Paul Kremer. Interior updates by New York's Redd Kaihoi introduce high-gloss retro styling while preserving Vripack's original layout.Accommodation remains for six guests across three ensuite cabins, including a master suite color-matched to the owner's 1952 Porsche 356A. The vessel maintains its signature split-level flybridge and expanded aft deck spaces."For me, Slow Poke is the perfect three night boat," the owner commented. Denison Yachting has revealed the first superyacht project from Turkey's Magnolia Yachts – the 41-meter Magnolia 41m, scheduled for delivery in 2026. The vessel represents the inaugural collaboration between naval architect Gregory C. Henk de Vries III will retire as Director of Feadship and CEO of Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw on 1 May 2025, concluding nearly four decades of leadership in the superyacht industry. He will transition to an Ambassador role for Feadship while maintaining involvement as a non-executive board member and shareholder of the family-owned shipbuilder.Henk de Vries De Vries joined the company in 1987 and became a director/shareholder in 1996 alongside his cousin Tom de Vries. Under their leadership, De Vries expanded to seven operating companies with over 1,200 employees.
