The construction of the 81m  contemporary three-masted schooner has commenced at Royal Huisman’s facilities in Vollenhove. This new build project for an Asian client was unveiled by the joint team of Royal Huisman, Dykstra Naval Architects, designer Mark Whiteley and Bart Kimman of Northrop & Johnson Asia at the 2016 Monaco Yacht Show.



Within a year Royal Huisman completed the design phase, the construction planning and a large part of the engineering for this yacht – all in close interaction with the owner, his team and the architects. Even the shipyard’s largest shipbuilding hall was upgraded in preparation for the new project. Now, the milestone all involved parties were anticipating has been achieved: the keel is laid and the building frame for the main deck is under construction. The build of the world’s largest aluminium yacht has started.



The exterior design is the result of the joint effort of Dykstra Naval Architects and Mark Whiteley Design, incorporating the owner’s requirements – world cruising, fast yet comfortable, and iconic looking. The distinguishing superstructure features a half-raised bridge for inside steering. The yacht’s flybridge offers full controls during sailing, comfortable seating for guests wishing to be close up with the yacht’s navigation, and opportunity for sunbathing. The sheltered main cockpit beneath the flybridge features a bar, sofas and a large table.



A variety of innovative or indeed exciting features enhance the yacht’s appeal. The newly developed sliding Rondal door with individually operated moving glass panels provides a seamless transition from the cockpit into the interior, whereas the flybridge steering stations give access to the hydraulically operated crow’s nest for an exhilarating ride up the main mast with breathtaking views.  
 
Various watersports gear such as water scooters, a large guest tender with dive equipment, kayaks and SUP boards will be stored under the aft deck, and the deck design comprises a number of clever features, such as the crew tender in front being recessed into a pocket, which can be used as a cockpit after launch. The design of the crew entrance on the foredeck ties in with the looks of the main deckhouse.



Good performance combined with sea kindliness, stability and comfort
Dykstra Naval Architects have focused all their considerable expertise on the creation of a hull with a distinguishing hard chine and schooner rig that combines good performance with sea kindliness, stability and comfort. The carbon rig by Rondal – ‘clearing Panama Bridge’ – will be supported by carbon standing rigging. Thys Nikkels of Dykstra Naval Architects explains “the plumb bow, very long waterline, sleek hull and large sail area will give the yacht the required high speed and good performance.”

Towing tests, wind tunnel tests, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations and a Velocity Prediction Program are all undertaken to evaluate the sail balance, keel position and rudder angles when under sail.



Mark Whiteley designed a modern interior in balance with the exterior living spaces. The design is based on Alpi Walnut bulkheads and comprises oak floors. Alpi is a natural material which - thanks to technology - achieves high performance and eco sustainable quality. A very high comfort level for the owner, family and friends are very important considerations, but the yacht can also be used as a platform for business meetings. The forward part of the superstructure has been reserved for the owner and his guests, featuring a combined saloon with comfortable seating and a large table with sixteen seats for formal dining.
 
Royal Huisman will deliver this project in 2020. The yard has recently announced their intention for the exclusive use of the facilities of Holland Jachtbouw (HJB) in Amsterdam following the anticipated termination of business by HJB after the passing away of founder Chris Gongriep.

Rolls-Royce challenges yachting with digital onboard Crystal Blue
UK-based engineering company Rolls-Royce unveils the 62-meter Crystal Blue concept yacht that boasts many innovative digital solutions, such as remote navigation or a smart dynamic positioning system that could only be seen on commercial vessels before.“Crystal Blue has been designed specifically to show how new technology can meet the yacht sector’s increased demand for higher performance, greater operating ranges and increased levels of guest comfort, without impacting the environment,” says Oscar Levander, vice president of Innovation at Rolls-Royce. One of the key novel features is the use of an intelligent dynamic positioning system, which automatically controls two so-called azimuth thrusters – marine propellers that rotate 360° around the vertical axis for a better maneuverability than a fixed propeller and a rudder system can provide – and a TT1100 bow thruster. This technology is common with support vessels that have to maintain their position next to oil platforms. In turn, when installed on the yacht, they allow her to remain in the right spot on the water without an anchor or “follow the sun”, so that guests can make the most of it while lounging on the deck. Crystal Blue also has the control center relocated below the bow. Equipped with display screens, sophisticated sensors and cameras, the internal bridge enables the crew to operate the boat with no need of front windows. This innovation frees up the forward part of the superstructure to let guests enjoy the panoramic view that is traditionally reserved for the captain. What’s more, Rolls-Royce has incorporated a “safe room” where guests and crew members can seek refuge in the event of attack. Once inside, the crew can override the controls and navigate the yacht remotely or authorize a shore-based center to pilot the vessel. Apart from ship intelligence, Crystal Blue notably features a hybrid propulsion system based on LNG fuel and battery power. Rolls-Royce claims that burning LNG has clear advantages over diesel oil for the yacht sector, as it is cleaner and helps pass stringent emission standards for navigating in ecologically sensitive areas. Nevertheless, only commercial vessels have enough space to carry LNG bunkering infrastructure. To this purpose, Crystal Blue is escorted by Blue Shadow support vessel that acts as the LNG bunkering barge. The additional fuel capacity increases the mothership cruising range to the remarkable 4.400 nautical miles.
Adler bets on high-tech with project Suprema XL
Swiss yard’s 25-meter flagship Suprema XL is set to introduce a series of carbon fiber yachts that would combine automotive, aviation and marine technology on one single boat.This first model boasts exterior and interior design by Nuvolari Lenard studio. Due for delivery in 2019, Adler Suprema XL embodies Italian style and German and Austrian technological expertise. One of the yacht’s key features is her HMS hybrid power system that combines twin Caterpillar diesel engines, each with 1,150 hp, and two ATE 100 kW electric units for emission and vibration free propulsion at 11 knots and a top speed of up to 30 knots.The yard’s engineering team claims that the hybrid package saves 50% on fuel over a conventional system. Such efficiency results in a transatlantic range of 3.500 nautical miles. Furthermore, various systems, including air-conditioning, heating, light and curtains, can be supervised either via six large LCD touchscreens from Boeing or through iPad. The latter option allows managing control settings even when not onboard.The yacht’s many distinctive amenities - like floor heating all over the lower deck, full-screen home cinema with an Internet connection and satellite reception, or privacy glass in the saloon, providing one-touch transformation of windows into opaque glass panels - work on batteries with enough capacity to ensure full day comfort without starting a generator. Apart from “eco-friendliness”, the benefit of this is that guests can enjoy the complete silence while at anchor in a bay.Accommodation onboard Suprema XL sleeps up to 8 guests and is split between 4 en-suite cabins on the lower deck, including the full-beam owner’s cabin, while the crew quarters allow for a staff of 2 members. The interior space can be personalized according to owner’s preferences regarding the choice of materials or illumination devices. The exterior boasts a large swimming platform and a bar on the sundeck protected by carbon fiber bimini. All decks are barrier-free, that is, with no stairs to climb, which makes it safer to travel with children. Adler is a young yacht brand of Swiss origin, operating in Italy at Cantieri Alto Adriatico yard located in Monfalcone, near Trieste. The production facility covers 20.000 square meters space, including 2 hangars able to host boats up to 9 meters height and a 3.000 square meter dry dock. On the whole, the premises have available space for over 100 vessels ranging from 4 to 27 meters.
Otam introduces 35-meter bespoke Project 115
Following the success of the 35-meter Gipsy, the Italian yard has embarked on a new project that in many ways contradicts the award-winning flagship in the Otam custom range launched last year. Although both models feature a 35-meters long all-aluminum hull, the new Project 115 designed by R+P Architecture studio stands out by a sleeker hull, modern exterior lines, a traditional layout of the main deck and a focus placed on the extended owner's private area. The layout is subject to meticulous negotiation, as long as Otam's policy is to follow the customer's guidelines in order to deliver a highly personalized product. However, the original proposal features an over 50-meter sun deck completely reserved for the owner, comprising a spa zone with Jacuzzi located at the bow, a spacious lounge, a dining area sheltered by a hard top and two sunbathing areas. Although the lower deck is shared by guests and the crew, both zones have separate access for a more discreet service onboard. Guest quarters boast two fully equipped VIP cabins spread across the 70-square meter surface. Looking aft, the beach club area can be customized to include a diving area, children's playroom or a gym, according to the owner's preferences. The lower deck also has room either for a classic garage or for the one with a lateral opening to host a larger tender. The forward part of the deck is where the engine room is located, apart from two storage compartments. Finally, the upper deck is dedicated to a semiclosed dining area surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, a salon and an entertainment area, thought the latter space can be alternatively used for a 7-meter long tender. Otam makes it clear that it was the yacht's potential owner's request to differentiate Project 115 from Gipsy that since its launch in 2016 has enjoyed considerable media coverage as the winner of the «Showboat Design Award» and the «World Superyacht Award».
Fincantieri opens up about 113-meter concept Ganimede
Italian shipyard has joint efforts with the Milan-based studio Hot Lab on the new 113-meter project inspired in a Greek myth, Ganimede, which, if completed, would make one of the world’s largest yachts ever built. Zeus turned into an eagle to capture the most beautiful of mortals, Ganimede, and transport him to Olympus. The namesake yacht features streaming lines that evoke the profile of an eagle, most notably the in the shape of the bow reminiscent of a curved eagle's beak and the construction of the decks that seem to cascade down from the upper to the lower one like bird’s plumage. In terms of styling, the boat’s exterior has various Art Deco elements, such as the central spiral staircase, connecting the beach club with the main deck. The 20-meter long beach club boasts a spa pool that is fed by a waterfall, which is a typical feature of Italian gardens. The owner’s private area on the upper deck comprises a master-suite and a lounge situated between two prism-shaped pools. The helipad can be furnished and turned into another outdoor recreational area reserved for the owner. The interior layout wouldn’t be complete without six guest cabins on the main deck and crew accommodation on the lower deck. The yacht will have plenty of storage space for four Jet Skis and three tenders. The 90-meter Linea developed by the British design studio Claydon Reeves and the 120-meter Private Bay by Horacio Bozzo are among other ongoing projects at Fincantieri yard.
Kleven to build 100m explorer with Lurssen
Kleven, the Norwegian commercial shipyard behind the Ulysses superyachts, is set to build a 100-meter explorer in partnership with German superyacht behemoth, Lurssen. This follows Lurssen getting an equity stake in Kleven earlier this year.The shipyard behind the 107-meter Ulysses, which her original owner, New Zealand's richest man, Graeme Hart, sold a few weeks ago, Kleven is also the shipyard that built Hart's new 116-meter flagship, also named Ulysses.Similarly to the way it worked with the Ulysses fleet, the new 100-meter explorer will see its hull being built by Kleven in Norway with Lurssen completing its interior outfitting at the Blom+Voss facility it acquired in Germany.I am very pleased with the quality of the work that has been done by Kleven, and how our organizations have worked together to bring this exciting project to life.Graeme Hart in November 2014One of the driving forces behind Norway's rise a yachting superpower, Kleven sold 40% of its equity earlier this year to a group of companies that included Lurssen for just over €30 million.
