60ft vessel that was featured in Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 film The Great Gatsby is for sale next month as part of the Garage Sale Trail, The Daily Telegraph reports. A movie-star yacht is priced at $1.85 million. She will also be listed on eBay.
Built in 1924, The Hurrica V has undergone a seven-year, $4 million restoration, led by owner Steve Gunns, who bought it in 2001. But Mr Gunns, 66, did not have time to enjoy the yacht, docked at Newport, and he was using the event to try and attract a buyer.
Movie fans can recognize the vessel as the one belonging to the mentor of a young Gatsby, played by Callan McAuliffe. It featured in several scenes but Mr Gunns said the crew recreated the interior in a studio with the hope of using more.
People behind the Garage Sale Trail contacted Mr Gunns in order to get involved.
My initial reaction was you’ve got to be joking and then I thought "you never know"
He’s sailed it as far as Hamilton Island in the north and across the Bass Straight to Hobart, but has mostly taken it to Sydney Harbour and Pittwater.
While it’s a recreation of the original she comes with all modern amenities such as TV and a microwave.
Darryl Nichols, Co-founder of the Garage Sale Trail, commented:
We’ve seen some truly unexpected items listed for Garage Sale Trail over the years. From a signed U2 Gold Record to a homemade hovercraft, a miniature cow, a beachside apartment and even a couple of grandpas who listed themselves for sale. The Great Gatsby yacht is by far the most expensive
The boat cost $10,000 and was built in 1924 for Melbourne man William Oliver. She served as a search and rescue boat in World War II with the hull painted grey and a machine guns added to its cockpit. As for the accommodation, the yacht sleeps 8 people and has two bathrooms.
