Netherland-based company Soel Yachts are proud to introduce a new electric yacht, the SoelCat 12. According to one of the yacht's designers David Czap, the vessel will completely run on solar power. "The SoelCat 12 is autonomous, because it is able to to supply its own energy (via the solar array) required for the electric propulsion system. It is therefore capable of supplying its own "fuel". It still has a captain on board just like any other normal vessel," Czap concluded.
The yacht is 11,8m long and accommodates up to 24 passengers. The price has not not yet been announced, as the first vessel is currently under construction.
Nowadays climate change concerns grow and more people are looking for environmentally responsible travel.
"It is great to see a lot of green initiatives at resorts these days, however, water bound transport always seems to be neglected", said Joep Koster, designer and naval architect at Soel Yachts. "The SoelCat 12 offers a 100% sustainable alternative to conventionally powered boats used in the industry, so far. Taking your guests on a lagoon tour without the noise and smell of combustions engines opens up unique PR values for the industry, given that the people will experience the sustainable technology hands on. Furthermore, the boat can offer surplus solar energy to the resort when the SoelCat 12 is moored", Joep added.
As for the performance, the SoelCat 12 has a total lithium battery capacity of 120kWh and can operate six hours at eight knots speed on batteries alone. The yacht can reach a top speed of 15 knots.
The company plans to launch their first vessel in the third quarter of 2016, but they are already taking reservations for test drives.
