Silver Arrows Marine and Mercedes-Benz Style, a design arm of Mercedes-Benz, have partnered to build a new yacht using SPD-SmartGlass. The yacht, called the ARROW460 Granturismo, will be unveiled next spring. She will feature an SPD-SmartGlass electronically dimmable roof supplied by Research Frontiers. First customer deliveries of this production yacht are planned to start in early 2016.
The idea behind Mercedes-Benz Style is to combine the luxury, design features and quality of their vehicles into other product areas such as eyewear, furniture, helicopters, luggage and motor yachts.
Silver Arrows Marine has selected Vision Systems to equip the motor yacht. "The complete systems with electronically dimmable windows are breakthrough solutions in the marine market", said Vision Systems CEO Carl Putman. "By exploring new concepts, Silver Arrows Marine revolutionizes the yacht industry with never-before-seen innovations and never-before-lived on-board experience."
Currently, Research Frontiers's Magic Sky Control is being offered for five Mercedes-Benz vehicles including the SLK, SL, S-Class Coupe, Maybach S600 and most recently S-Class sedan.
Over 150% of the entire roofline is taken up by the glass. The roof blocks UV rays and changes transparency from light to dark.
The new yacht will have an overall length of approximately14.17m and a beam length of roughly 3.97m.
We, for one, are excited to see how the experience of Mercedes-Benz will influence the yacht industry in the future.
