Southern Wind delivers 32m sailing yacht The Power of 2
South African shipyard Southern Wind has delivered the third hull of SW105 series. The yacht launched earlier this year and christened ThePower of 2 has now departed from Cape Town after extemsive sea trials for her maiden voyage to the North Sea.The yacht features interior and exterior design by Nauta Design, with the Farr Yacht Design responsible for the naval architecture. This cooperation has already met recognition from the industry, with 29-meter Southern Wind yacht Seatius winning Neptune Award for the 2019 Best Sailing Yacht Interiors at the Boat International Design and Innovation Awards. The Power of 2 was ordered by an experienced sailor who was looking to step up from a smaller sailing yacht to faster sailing and exploring remote locations in comfort and safety. She is ideal for long- range navigation and easy sailing given different sea conditions. The yacht’s twin rudder system combined with the lifting keel (3-5m) allows access to more remote shallower ports and anchorages, and with the keel down this configuration provides excellent upwind light air performance. Meanwhile, the yacht’s fixed bowsprit with an integrated anchor arm has been designed for easy anchoring. She is built with a Deck Saloon configuration that was specifically designed by Nauta Design and Southern Wind Shipyard. That allows for a tall and easily accessible engine room, located below the saloon. A high capacity battery installation allows for longer periods of silent running and greater autonomy, a real plus for a yacht that will spend most of the time away from harbours and marina facilities. The style of the Power of 2’ interior is essential and modern at the same time. The oak furniture combined with muted and toned textiles and upholstery create a warm atmosphere on board, with no compromise to design or functionality. The interior features Southern Wind Shipyard’s most popular owner’s cabin, with the forward layout. This comprises three comfortable en-suite guest cabins amidships with crew quarters and galley aft; a layout that allows maximum privacy for crew and guests. The main saloon is a light, bright open space where eight to ten people can relax together in comfort on sofas or at the dining table while enjoying panoramic 270° window views. Immediately forward of the living area, lies a fully equipped custom bar that separates the main saloon from the owner’s private area. The Power of 2 has been conceived and built to be respectful in terms of sustainability, making her an ‘eco-friendly’ yacht. Marco Alberti, SWS General Manager explains: As an example, water and fuel treatment systems on board this SW105 were more complex than normal, incorporating fuel polishers and water softeners. Added to that, fridges are stocked with carefully stowed glass bottles filled with drinking water that is desalinated, re-mineralised and sterilised on board.Southern Wind Shipyard was founded in 1991 by Italian entrepreneur Willy Persico. Located in the city of Cape Town, South Africa, the shipyard specialises in high-performance composite sailing yachts from 25 to 35 metres, designed for both relaxed cruising and high-octane sailing. Among other noticeable vessels of the yard stands a 30-metre sailing yacht Blues to be seen at Palma Superyacht Show 2019.

Her World Debut is scheduled at Cannes Yachting Festival 2019.Sirena 88 is a true expedition-go-anywhere 26.8-meters yacht in comfort and safety on a dynamically stabilized offshore design. According to the hull characteristics and design, it is an evolution of her smaller sister Sirena 64, a low resistance that performs efficiently with a minimum of fuel consumption at high and at all speed ranges. For the date the composite hull was fully vacuum infused, using E-glass and vinyl ester resin. The all-carbon-fiber-construction deck and superstructure also were vacuum-infused, and the hull, deck, and superstructure have been joined. Construction has also begun to fit out the furniture of the main-deck interior as well as areas on the lower deck and the flying bridge.“We have some additional layout ideas that we are going introduce,” says Tanil Surmeli, product manager for Sirena Yachts “The Sirena 88 will make her debut at Cannes, but some additional layouts will also be shown there.”Her advanced naval architecture by German Frers and the interior design is by well-known Cor D. The aft deck extends the main saloon with a large al fresco dining area while the bridge deck with extra seating complements the sky lounge. The sun deck includes a bar, forward seating area and Jacuzzi aft. The foredeck social area will be protected from wind and ensure privacy with high bulwarks, while a dipping pool will be flanked by sun pad lounge areas to either side. Down port and starboard, stairs will be the swim platform, served by a striking beach club built into the transom. The flying bridge will be a social space all its own with a bar serves another formal dining table while aft groupings of settees will surround large cocktail tables.Accommodations space is very generous and includes the full-width Owner cabin with its own balcony to the sea, plus four en-suite, one of them a very large VIP guest suite. Two formal dinner areas, one “al fresco” on the upper deck and a second on the specially designated area on the main deck saloon are planned. Sirena 88 features a five decks layout accommodating up to twelve persons with elegant and stylish decor. A full-beam crew area insulates the guest accommodations from the engine space and provides up to four crews with a private sitting room and two cabins. Ferretti releases a movie in the memory of Carlo Riva, two years after his death
During the fourteenth edition of Italian Film Festival Cortinametraggio, a movie “The Master Bridge (La Plancia)” was premiered as a tribute made by the Ferretti Group to the genius of Carlo Riva, two years after his death.La PlanciaA 15-minute film celebrates the historic headquarters in Sarnico and Carlo Riva’s famous futuristic office the Plancia, overlooking Lake Iseo. The latter was designed by Riva himself along with architect Giorgio Barilani, and is considered an authentic architectural masterpiece. Carlo Riva was so fond of it that even after he sold the shipyard, he rented La Plancia and continued to use it as his office for almost ten years. The short film also highlights the history of the entire shipyard, telling the story of a young filmmaker, played by actor Gabriele Stella, in search of the secret and the essence of the Riva myth.Following an enlightening tour among the yachts under construction and an interview inside the Plancia with an enigmatic Giorgio Marchesi, who plays the shipyard manager, the young filmmaker grasps the enchanting power of the most famous speedboats in the world. Indeed, master craftsmanship with cutting-edge technologies and innovative design remain the distinguished features of the Riva brand, with such famous people as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who used a Junior as the tender of their yacht, Sean Connery, who owned the historic Rudy model, and on to Sofia Loren and George Clooney listed among the brand’s clients. One of the oldest boatyards in the world, Riva, was established in 1842 on Lake Iseo, in Sarnico-Italy. One hundred years later, the already recognised brand became to a synonym of elegance, status and perfection under Carlo Riva’s direction. Riva’s creations became the object of desire for the aristocracy, successful businessmen and movie stars. For instance, next month, RM Sotheby’s will auction one of the notable vessels built then for Princess Grace Kelly and Primce Rainier III.
Retro-styled Harbour Classic 40 to shine at the 2019 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show
The hugely popular 40ft-plus power segment is set to exhibit at the 2019 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS), with a multitude of international debuts, Australian launches, and Queensland firsts.“The 40ft-plus segment offers an extremely diverse and versatile selection of boats,” said SCIBS General Manager Johan Hasser, whose team is preparing to host more than 45,000 visitors and 300 exhibitors at the event from May 23-26, 2019 in Queensland, Australia. The Whitehaven Company was established by Keith Hanson to fill what he believed was a niche in the market for high-end boats that would reflect their owners’ visions. The boats are built in Taiwan with Keith’s son, Ryan overseeing the team of boat builders. The Harbour Classic 40 concept was drawn by highly respected New Zealand yacht designer builder Bill Upfold, with Australian naval architect Misha Merzliakov reimagining her for discerning Australian day boaters. Merzliakov is based in Brisbane and has traditionally designed large motor yachts both here and overseas. You can see the enthusiasm in the design and listening to him, it sounds like he has borrowed design elements from all over the place. There is a chance that such an approach could deliver a Jekyll and Hyde result, but like a mad scientist, he has mixed the elements together with a fine touch. The Harbour Classic 40 is a sophisticated and supremely comfortable 40ft dayboat, which combines the aesthetic and timeless appeal of a gentleman’s cruiser with the benefits of high-tech design and engineering, constructed with an expertly-designed hull for a quieter ride.Except much-anticipated Harbour Classic 40, the all-new Whitehaven 6100 Coupe with its incredible superyacht-inspired Euro Edition styling package will be presented.“These vessels represent close to two years of R&D and production, and we are very proud to bring them to SCIBS,” Whitehaven Motor Yachts Managing Director Bruce Scott said.Below decks, the galley is bathed in natural light, enjoys a line of sight to the helm and all the mod-cons of boutique apartment living for a perfect day or weekend on the water. Accommodation is flexible depending on owners needs with the ability to sleep up to six aboard, so friends and family are always welcome.Offering single or twin-engine arrangements, owners can prioritize pace and maintenance to suit their boating lifestyle. Either way, she'll achieve 25 to 30 knots to find that ideal anchorage in time for sunset cocktails. Underpinning the boat in standard guise will be a single Volvo D6 480hp shaft drive with ZF gearbox. The first boat built has received an engine upgrade in the form of a Cummins Q6.7 550hp engine. It is quiet and unassuming and the performance perfectly suits the leisurely nature of the Harbour Classic 40 and will see you cruising from bay to bay in comfort. Elegant, refined, so well suited to a more leisurely pace of boating, the Harbour Classic 40 represents the romance of yesteryear with the precision engineering, power, and performance that are synonymous with all Whitehaven vessels. Each Whitehaven Harbour Classic 40 will be a customized masterpiece, brought to life for her owners with the personalized approach, precision and pride that are hallmarks of Whitehaven Motor Yachts.@Photos by Whitehaven Yachts
