A pioneer in automation and furling systems on large sailing yachts, Italian shipyard Perini Navi was founded in 1983 by Fabio Perini. The builder has constructed 61 motor and sailing superyachts so far, with an average LOA of 49 metres. Meanwhile, the company’s legendary Maltese Falcon remained the world’s largest sailing yacht until 2017. 

Today Yacht Harbour recalls the largest vessels built by the yard.

Maltese Falcon is an iconic yacht that had held the title of the world’s largest sailing yacht until Oceanco launched the Black Pearl in 2017.

Commissioned in 2000 by Tom Perkins, the late venture capitalist, the Maltese Falcon  took nearly six years to complete. Sold to hedge fund manager Elena Ambrosiadou at an asking price of €70 million in 2009, the 88-meter is now one of the largest yachts available for charter with a rate starting from €360,000 per week.

Maltese Falcon’ most innovative attribute became her sails that could rotate based on the direction of the wind. This was a first for the yachting industry. This innovative system allows the yacht to even sail against the wind. 

Maltese Falcon features a cruising speed of 16 knots. Meanwhile, in a storm in the Gulf of Lion, France she demonstrated a speed of 26 knots under sail alone.

Designed by Ken Freivokh, the Maltese Falcon was extensively refurbished in 2015/2016 during a refit. She can accommodate up to 12 guests on-board.

Delivered in 2013 by Picchiotti, part of the Perini Navi group, Nautilus (back then Grace E) instantly received a positive reaction at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2014, thanks to a unique design. 

Her first owner, according to several sources, was Florida-based billionaire Bob Stiller, who built his fortune on a coffee empire known as Keurig Green Mountain.  In Q2 2017, the yacht was listed for sale and ultimately found a buyer in March 2018. She was sold asking € 78,500,000.

With a beam of 13.2 metres and a draft of 4 metres, Nautilus features exterior design by Philippe Briand and interior style by Remi Tessier. Her gross tonnage makes 1590 tons.

The superyacht's key features include an open-air Jacuzzi, sauna, gym, hydrotherapy bath and pool. She also hosts a beauty salon, meditation room, sunbathing and massage area as well as a sushi bar. If that is not enough to entertain the guests, there is also a film library, satellite TV, iPod docking stations and Wi-Fi.

From a technical standpoint, Nautilus can reach a top speed of 16.5 knots and cruise at 14.5 knots. As for the accommodation, 12 guests in 6 suites can be carried on-board, as well as a crew of 20.

The second largest sailing yacht built by the yard since the Maltese Falcon, Badis I (originally Sybaris) was conceived for American businessman Bill Duker in 2016. The yacht was listed for sale in April 2017 asking €88 million and sold at the same asking price in October 2018.

Naval architecture on this project was handled by Perini Navi's in-house team and French designer, Philippe Briand who had previously worked with the group on the 73-metre motor yacht Grace E.

The yacht was built out of alloy complete with a keel of variable draught (4.5m to 11.74m) in order to allow access to shallow areas and achieve good sailing performance. Badis I' sails stretch over a surface of 2,300 square meters and can be controlled solely with consoles in the cockpit.

Badis I cruises at 12.5 knots and reaches a top speed at 17.5 knots. She can host up to 12 guests taken care of by a crew of 12.

The Spirit Of The C’s is the largest aluminium sailing yacht in the world. She features a beam of 12.7 metres and a draft of 9.4 metres, adding up to a gross tonnage of 655 tons. She is powered by Deutz-MWM engines of 1400 HP each, giving her a maximum speed of 16 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots. 

Featuring exteriors by Nuvolari & Lenard and interiors by Perini Navi, Remi Tessier, Dernier Etage, and the vessel is trademarked with a large retractable bathing platform, providing easy access into the water or onto the tenders and folding perfectly into the stern aft, when not in use.

Along with a crew of 11, Spirit Of The C's  can accommodate up to 10 guests within five staterooms, including a full-beam master suite.

The yacht is now back on the charter market, following an extensive refit which included a sundeck extension, a complete rebuild and refurbishment of her interior and the remodelling of the guest cockpit area. The charter price starts from €198,000 per week.


#5. Seahawk

All-aluminium sailing yacht Seahawk features Perini Navi in-house exteriors and naval architecture developed in collaboration with Ron Holland Design, along with interiors by French studio Liaigre. She offers accommodation to 12 guests within 6 cabins.

With a beam of 11.4 metres and a draft of 12.3 metres, she has an aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure. This adds up to a gross tonnage of 491 tons. Seahawk reaches a maximum speed of 15.50 knots and cruises comfortably at 13 knots. 

Following her 2018 refit, Seahawk has been listed for sale asking €32,000,000.

Second 60m of the series, the design brief called for Perseus 3 to feature the tallest carbon fibre mast ever built, and the biggest downwind sail area on a yacht, thanks to her unique bowsprit. Built in aluminium with a carbon bowsprit, she features a cruising speed of 12 knots.

Perseus 3 offers accommodation to up to 12 guests within five spacious suites, including a full-beam master suite with a private lounge and study, two VIP doubles, and two twins with additional Pullman berths.

The yacht’s on-deck trademarks comprise a swim-in-place heated pool on the foredeck and a large flybridge with cushioned sun pads, sofas and a BBQ. On the main deck, more formal al fresco dining can be enjoyed in the cockpit, which is sheltered by a curve of glass, also enclosing the exterior lounge.

The yacht is available for charter from €250,000 per week.



#7. Seven
Length: 60m
Year: 2017



The seventh largest yacht by Perini Navi, Seven, was launched in 2017 as the third 60-metre unit.

Seven is trademarked with lighting design by Videoworks and design studio Dante O Benini & Partners. She can accommodate 10 guests in 5 cabins with an interior design by Studio Dante O. Bellini and an exterior design by Perini Navi.

The yacht is fitted with two Panamax aluminium masts with carbon-fibre rigging, booms and spreaders, contributing to a total sail plan of more than 2,000 square metres. Meanwhile, Seven’s maximum speed makes 15 knots.

One of several models in the new Kriger Projects series of 90 to 150 metres in LOA, the 110-metre Project Odin, is available on sale via IYC asking € 220,000,000, with the 2023 delivery.The concept is presented by award-winning designer Diana Scott and Naval Architect McFarlane Ship-design, with interiors by H2 Yacht Design. Able to host up to 36 guests across 17 cabins and a master suite, the vessel has a potential for luxury charter, along with exclusively private use. Project Odin boasts numerous onboard spaces, including living spaces, formal and informal dining areas, gyms and a lavish cinema room. A defining design feature is the optional fold out balconies throughout the yacht’s living and accommodation areas for a true on-water feel. Ferretti reveals new Custom Line 106
Italian builder Ferretti has introduced new yacht from the Custom Line planing line, based on the model designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design studio.With her length of 32.82 metres and the width of 7.3 metres, the Custom Line 106 is a product of the partnership between the Francesco Paszkowski Design studio, Ferretti Group's Engineering Department and the Product Strategy Committee led by Mr. Piero Ferrari. The interior styling is developed by Francesco Paszkowski in collaboration with Margherita Casprini.
Custom 106 features sleek and powerful profile, with taut lines running from the stern to the forward area, generating a spectacular alternation of materials and colours in the light structural surfaces and dark tinted windows. The hull windows are broad and ample, while a sense of direct contact with the sea is offered by the full-length deck windows, further expanded by their convex shape. The new yacht is distinguished by 220 m2 of interconnected exterior floor surfaces. The flybridge is directly connected to the bow through a spacious port walkway, while the starboard walkway leads to the cockpit, from which the flybridge is reached using the port stairway.The vessel comes with a garage for storing a Williams DieselJet505 tender and a three-person jet ski can be lowered into the water. The bow area is also enriched an additional garage for a Mini Jet Williams 2.80 or a compact three-person jet ski. On the main deck, there is the full-beam master cabin of 6.50 metres in width to be found, while two VIP cabins and two twin suites lay on the lower deck. The crew area located in the foredeck consists of a captain's cabin with separate shower and two double crew cabins.Custom Line 106 will come equipped with two 2217-Mhp MTU 16V 2000 M86 engines, allowing the yacht to cruise at 20 knots and reach her maximum speed at 23 knots. Alternatively, there is an option for twin 2638-Mhp MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines, which can reach a cruising speed of 22 knots and a maximum speed of 26 knots. The vessel will be fitted with electro-hydraulic stabilising fins, offering both underway and zero-speed modes. On request, gyroscopic stabilisers can also be fitted for maximum comfort at anchor.
Heesen delivers full-custom 56m superyacht Galvas
Dutch builder Heesen has shared news on the delivery of its YN 18556 hull previously known as Project Neptune, the 56-metre full custom steel FDHF superyaht Galvas.

Basing upon Heesen’s engineering platform for the 55m FDHF Steel Class, Galvas sports an innovative design penned by British firm H2. The yacht’s subtle paint scheme boasts a silver nuance on the transom, wing station and mast.On the functional side, the exterior design includes tenders stored on the forward deck under hatch covers, while the lower beach club houses water toys. A 3.5-metre long fixed platform provides easy access to the water. In the meantime, warm teak, blue backlit panels and bamboo finishing of the outdoor lounge areas blend with the ocean beyond.

With her interior volume of 770 GT, Galvas offers accommodation to up to 12 guests (with the crew of 13) across six staterooms designed by British design studio Reymond Langton, at the owner’s choice. Meanwhile, his generous 85-square-metre master suite is set forward on the main deck, comprising a private gym with steam room, office, full-beam bedroom and bathroom. The interior architecture throughout the main deck and upper deck saloons is in sycamore combined with understated geometric motifs. The delicate fabrics and soft furnishings interplay with artworks by DKT in glass, gypsum, resin and bronze.Two MTU 8V 4000 M63 diesel engines coupled with the ultra-efficient FDHF steel hull allowed Galvas to exceed her top speed of 15.5 knots during sea trials. At a cruising speed of 13 knots, she will boast a range of 3,100 nautical miles. The yard is particularly proud that YN 18556 is the second yacht in Heesen’s fleet to comply with the latest emissions regulations thanks to an SCR catalytic system reducing NOx exhaust emissions, as long as ecology awareness has been recently in the focus with the major yacht builders.Galvas has already completed rigorous tests in the North Sea, and is now heading to the Mediterranean for her maiden voyage.
To spy or not to spy: techno utilities aboard a €65 million James-Bond-inspired superyacht
Along with the recent press hype over the forthcoming episode of the James Bond film series, Italian Videoworks Group has revealed the technologies they deployed on-board a 69-metre James-Bond-inspired Benetti superyacht Spectre, delivered in 2018.Even bearing her name after a James Bond film, the yacht represents a steel-hulled vessel with aluminium superstructure, pool and "touch ang go" helipad. Spectre features exterior design by Benetti, Mulder Design and Giorgio Cassetta, able to demonstrate a maximum speed of 21.2 knots.The indoor design concept has been created by the Benetti Interior Style Department, while Videoworks has built a highly technological installation that comprises audio-video, network, telephony, home automation and CCTV systems. Below is more information on the yacht’s amazing techno features.AUDIO-VIDEOThe AV system is fully centralised, installed in a small dedicated rack room, with 7 full-height racks. Their super-customised frame has been specifically designed to fit into the available space (the cabins have only TVs, speakers and iPads). A full-height rack is in the wheelhouse, whereas a small deck rack is dedicated to networking and communications.Audio-video contents are transmitted via fibre-optics. In addition to the Kaleidescape film and music server, there is a server dedicated to the crew, who can access it via iPads. With the Kaleidescape provider, Videoworks has managed the pre-loading of approximately 1800 DVDs and Blu-ray discs (music and films), complete with covers, metadata, info on actors, trailers and special content. In this way Owners are guaranteed a customised service that is certainly convenient to use.Every room in Spectre has its own HDMI socket near the TV, to display files from local sources. The skylounge hall in the upper deck has two TVs (with 75” and 49” screens) with independent audio systems, although they share the same group of sources. Everything is managed through a matrix that allows to configure the area with multiple combinations, depending on the purpose (party, show, institutional video + satellite channel, etc.). The Sea Tel 100 TV HD satellite dishes (SAT TV) can receive European and American HD channels. This kind of satellite dish works worldwide, which means there is no need for LNB replacement when changing hemisphere.HOME AUTOMATIONInternal and external LED lights are managed via Crestron keyboards and DALI protocol, with customised silk-screen printed buttons. Videoworks’s sister company, Itworks, has created a customised software for light management, which allows to restore previously saved settings and to save the new configuration as setting, uploading it when requested. A 'secret' procedure, known only to the crew, allows to return to the original settings and to easily restore the system. Owners can use an iPad to call staff from any part of the yacht; the call is received and displayed in the crew mess and in the pantry. The super-silent Lutron blinds can be controlled via Crestron touch-screen and iPad with customised silk-screen printed keyboards. NMEA navigation information (wind speed, direction, cruising speed, sea depth, etc.) can be viewed using the specific Myinfos App developed by Itworks. NETWORK AND CYBERSECURITYOnboard network security (firewall, bandwidth manager, connection manager, etc.) is guaranteed by the Kerio NG500 system, which allows to surf securely while on board and to manage bandwidth as needed, e.g. if the Owner needs to work aboard, the system allows to limit bandwidth access and use. To guarantee the greatest security possible, the system uses Cisco products from the Catalyst and Aironet professional lines.TELEPHONYThe telephone switchboard is managed through a Cisco Router and the Cisco Unified Communication Manager software. The system includes 17 cordless telephones + 17 landlines, buzzer, fax line and light signals for calls from the Engine Room.CCTV SYSTEM The closed circuit television system manages 10 cameras, two PTZ cameras (one interior and one exterior), a number of external fixed cameras and a 360° fisheye camera, two observation and management stations (one in the wheelhouse and one in the crew mess), through a dedicated Panasonic software and PC touch panel. The Network Disk Recorder allows the captain to make recordings for security, control and surveillance purposes. The CCTV system is integrated in the entertainment section through the Itworks 'Myinfos' app.__________The yacht, which is a winner of the 2019 World Superyacht Awards category ‘Displacement yachts between 500 and 1,999 tonnes,’ was built for US entrepreneur John Staluppi (net worth $500 million, Celebrity Net Worth) with a passion for speed and technology in mind and as a part of his James-Bond inspired-fleet. Nevertheless, Staluppi sold Spectre in February 2019 asking €65,000,000.Meanwhile, the James Bond theme has been driving inspiration for numerous yacht enthusiasts through years. 50m high-speed Feadship Project 706 takes on outfitting
Past weekend, recently unveiled Fedship in-build, the 49.5-metre Project 706, took a move from the structural build facility to Feadship outfitting yard in Aalsmeer, manoeuvring her way through the Dutch canals. The details on the project are kept in strict secrecy. The key point known about Project 706 is that the all-aluminium superyacht is conceived to become one of the fastest Feadships on the water, thanks to a series of high-performance water jets she will come equipped with. It has been also said, the vessel’s completion is scheduled to 2020. Meanwhile, another brand new Feadship, 77-metre Syzygy 818 is now undergoing sea trials at the North Sea. Still, the 77-metre is not the one to make it to the list of the Dutch yard's largest vessels of over 90 metres.
